I can’t imagine life without a refrigerator in the kitchen. This appliance is so important that it is in every home. Unfortunately, its most important function – cooling food – can be compromised by a very popular activity. We are talking about sticking magnets on the appliance door.
Why can magnets damage your refrigerator? Is it the electromagnetic field they emit?
The refrigerator as a door to the world
Besides the mundane function of cooling and freezing food, the refrigerator has a less obvious function. It allows us to explore the world. Storing food at low temperatures allows people to sample flavors from around the world. Food brought from distant lands can be stored in the refrigerator without fear of it spoiling. This is very convenient when preparing Mexican, Indian, Greek or Korean dishes.
On the other hand, the fridge can remind us of trips to faraway places – many Poles, including myself, hang on it magnets bought in places they have visited. People who travel a lot often fill their fridge with countless souvenirs. Unfortunately, this is not always a good patent.
A fridge full of magnets is a mistake.
As I mentioned above, there are many magnets on my refrigerator door.
Some are from trips, some are gifts from loved ones, and some are related to important events for me and my family, such as going to movies, concerts, and other events. When we live with more than one person, we have no trouble filling the refrigerator quickly.
Some people are concerned that a large number of magnets emit a strong electromagnetic field that interferes with electrical appliances. For this field to have a really negative effect, it would have to be much stronger (and no one hangs neodymium magnets on the fridge, right?), so there’s nothing to worry about in that regard.
As it turns out, the problem is weight. Some memorabilia is made of metal, which naturally puts a strain on the refrigerator door. This puts undue pressure on the hinges, and can also cause the seal to bend and lose pressure.
What are the best refrigerator magnets?
Honestly, the lighter the better. I’m certainly not without flaws, because convex metal magnets are, in my opinion, the prettiest. That’s why I have at least a few of them.
However, I try to keep most of them minimalistic in aesthetics, with no protrusions or heavy elements. I recently bought an Instax camera – the photos on it turn out small, so they fit perfectly on the wide refrigerator door. In addition, photos carry more emotions and memories, so in my case they are a great substitute for magnets.
