Should you let fresh air into your bedroom at night? Not a good idea. Sleep experts recommend sleeping with the windows closed for a specific reason. Here’s the reason behind it.
Many people think that if their bedroom window is open at night, the fresh air will help them sleep better. However, according to a study conducted in 2020 by the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, this habit has the exact opposite effect and can sometimes have fatal health consequences.
Study shows: here’s why you should close your windows at night
According to a study by the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, it is better to sleep with the windows closed at night.
In the study, the University of Mainz concluded that nighttime traffic noise has a significant impact on a person’s well-being and health – even if you’re a sound sleeper and only subconsciously perceive the noise.
The noise level in your bedroom at night depends on many factors, but above all on the location of your house or apartment. However, even when you are awake, your body releases stress hormones when at least one car drives by, which can lead to high cholesterol and blood pressure.
If you subconsciously perceive traffic noise every night while you sleep, your risk of cardiovascular disease and mental health issues such as depression or anxiety may increase. It is better to provide a draught 15 minutes before bedtime and in the morning after waking up.
