Hair washing revolution on TikTok: expert reveals the mistakes everyone makes!
There are several signs that indicate the quality of a barbershop. Hairdressers tell us which warning signs customers should look out for.
For many people, hair is not just hair, but an expression of personality and individuality. That’s why finding the right hair salon can be crucial. After all, not every stylist can turn dark brown hair into platinum blond, make a perm look modern, or skillfully use extensions. Unfortunately, many clients only realize that the hair salon wasn’t the best choice after a bad haircut.
Having spoken to hairdresser Julia Hiller. She runs the Sea Giulia salon tells us what warning signs clients should look out for. Hairdressers on TikTok are also setting off warning signs.
1. No appointments
“In my opinion, the first warning sign is when you don’t work with clients by appointment and only work with those who come in without appointments,” says a hairdresser .This makes it difficult to plan your work day. “When things are slow, you have plenty of time for each individual client, but when everyone is busy, you have almost no time, and it’s like working on an assembly line.” It doesn’t make sense for either the clients or the hairdresser.
2. Prices are too low
Price plays an important role for many customers, but they should be careful when it comes to overly tempting bargains. “Low prices are usually a sign that you are working with substandard products and that you have little time for customers and their desires” . More often than not, workers at such salons are underpaid. “With low prices, hairdressers have to work much harder to achieve good sales,” says the expert. Hairdressers with high prices and settlements often have to justify .
3. Consultation with a color chart at the hairdresser’s office
In principle, hairdressers can consult their clients using color charts to show them possible color nuances. “But if the client himself looks at the color chart and picks a color from it, this is problematic. Because in very rare cases, the color turns out exactly as it does on the chart,” says Hiller. It must be communicated openly to the customer which colors are possible and which are not. “Otherwise, the customer always has the selected color from the color chart in mind, but gets a completely different result.”
Color charts can help with color selection. However, how the color ultimately looks depends also on the client’s hair.
4. No time for a consultation at the hair salon
If the hairdresser doesn’t take the time for a consultation, it’s “not a good sign. All of the client’s questions should be clarified during the consultation,” says Hiller. Hairstylists should scrutinize the hair texture, discuss the goal and honestly explain what is possible and what is not. “Not everything is possible with every hair type. Unfortunately, not every hairdresser explains this to their clients,” criticizes the expert.
5.Comments about hair during a visit to the hairdresser
On Reddit, people also discuss what behavior of hairdressers they consider ared flag. User la-noche-viene criticizes rude and unwanted comments about clients’ hair: “Comments like “Did you know you have so much hair?” or “Have you ever thought about donating your hair?” can mean that the hairdresser can’t handle your hair length.
6. It takes too long to get a haircut.
Also, if a haircut takes longer than usual, clients may be suspicious. Reddit user la-noche-viene reports a visit to a hairdresser that took a suspiciously long time and ultimately led to an undesirable result, “I tried to get up, but the hairdresser sat me back down and continued cutting my hair. I let her because I thought she was an expert.” The client ended up getting a layered haircut, even though it wasn’t what she wanted at all.
If a simple haircut takes too long, it can result in layers that the client doesn’t want.
7. The unreliability of hairdressers
In a video on TikTok, hairdresser Holly gives tips on how to recognize unreliable salons: if a hairdresser is constantly canceling appointments, it’s a clear warning sign, she explains. She too has to reschedule appointments from time to time, “but I do it to serve as many clients as possible. I would never cancel an appointment unless it was a real emergency. For example, if my child broke his leg, I would reschedule an appointment. But not when I just want to go shopping.”
8. Always late
If a hairdresser is regularly late, it’s also a red flag. “I’m talking about hairdressers who are consistently half an hour or more late,” she explains. It’s understandable if you’re a little late for some appointments. For example, if the first client is ten minutes late, you may be behind schedule.
However, if clients have to wait for more than half an hour, it disrupts their daily routine, the expert notes.
9. “The usual?”: a problematic question in the barbershop
The hairdresser should give the client enough time to discuss different options. Sometimes clients themselves don’t know they want a change until all the options are explained to them. Asking, “Do you want the same thing you’ve always wanted?” is a red flag. Often the customer doesn’t want the same thing they’ve always wanted, but after being asked, they simply agree. “Clients want change and the hairdresser isn’t helping them,” the hairdresser explains. It’s better to ask, “What was your haircut last time?” This encourages clients to talk, and they will let you know if they want the same haircut again or something new.
