He who touches pays: a new mono camera now captures cell phone use while driving. The first device was put into operation a few days ago.
A new technical step in the fight against violations of the rules for cell phone use while driving. After test phases in Mainz and Trier, the first conventional cell phone speed camera goes into operation. The Minister of the Interior presented the so-called Monocam on Friday.
Cell phone offenders in trouble: new cameras to catch violations
Developed in the Netherlands, the Monocam camera uses software to determine whether a driver is using a cell phone. It’s not just carrying certain items in the car that is expensive .Drivers face fines and penalties if they pick up their phone while driving.
Until now, such offenses have been difficult to penalize. With the new camera, it will be easier for the police to document and prosecute cell phone violations.
Introduction after a successful testing phase: the number of cell phone-related violations has been at least halved
- In the first test phase, 327 violations were detected on Autobahn 602.
- In the second phase, the police recorded 941 traffic violations.
Monocam technology, which is already in use by Dutch police, works in a similar way to distance and speed monitoring systems.
- The software uses artificial intelligence to detect cell phones and the appropriate hand position in the driver’s area.
- A camera captures the violation photographically.
- Specially trained police officers then assess the detected violation.
