A series of five-cent coins issued more than two decades ago could sell for more than $4 million at international auctions .
U.S. Numismatics: the value of these valuable nickel coins depends on their condition, rarity and demand among collectors.
Among the everyday objects that can hide real treasures, ancient coins occupy a privileged place. In particular, some U.S. five-cent coins , which are more than 20 years old, have reached astronomical prices on the auction market, even exceeding 4 million dollars apiece. The key is its rarity, minting errors and degree of preservation.
These items, highly sought after by numismatic collectors, can be forgotten in drawers or purses. If you have a five-cent coin with an old date or special details, you may have a jewel worth thousands of dollars. Below we present four of the most valuable of these.
The most valuable 5-cent coins are.
1. Liberty Head V 1913.
The 1913 Liberty Head V five-cent coin is one of the rarest and most coveted pieces. There are only five of themin the world, and three of them are in the hands of private collectors. According to USA Today, one of these coins (graded PR66) sold for $4.56 million in 2018, while another, lower-grade coin (PR63) went under the hammer for $4.2 million in 2022.
Although both coins have the same year of minting, their prices vary depending on their degree of preservation. In the world of numismatics, this piece can have a value in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, regardless of inflation or market trends.
2 . Buffalo Nickel 1918/7-D
Another striking case is the 1918/7-D Buffalo Nickel coin with a minting error that causes the previous year’s β7β to still be visible underneath the β8β. Far from detracting from its value, these imperfections greatly increase its price due to its exclusivity.
One of these coins in perfect condition sold for $350,750 in 2006, which when adjusted for inflation is equivalent to $549,202 in 2024. Although they are unlikely to be found in circulation, experts say they can still be found in family collections or second hand markets.
3. Buffalo Nickel 1926-S.
Another valuable coin is the 1926 Buffalo Nickel. Its rarity lies in its minting location: the San Francisco Mint, where only 970,000 pieces were minted . Compared to the millions minted by other mints, this number makes this coin rare.
In 2008, one of these coins in MS66 condition sold at auction for $322,000, equivalent to $472,096 at today’s exchange rate. The better the state of preservation, the higher the price that can be obtained at auction.
4- The 1867 Shield Nickel.
Another very popular coin is the 1867shield nickel with lightning bolts. At the beginning of production, the reverse featured lightning bolts around the number β5 β but they were soon removed. The few coins that retained the rays became very valuable.
An example of this version, graded PR66 by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), sold in 2004 for $132,250. According to the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) , in today’s money this equates to approximately $220,998 .
Recent Coins
While the most valuable coins are usually antique coins, some modern specimens can also be valuable, especially those minted between 1942 and 1945 that contained silver.
According to The Spruce Crafts, the starting value of any nickel shield can be $16, even if it’s not a rare piece. So going through your family collection or purses could reveal a valuable surprise.
