Many people don’t even know about this practical vegetable oil.
Are you looking for an alternative to olive oil? We will show you which oil can be used instead and why olive oil is not always the best choice.
Here you can read which oils are suitable for cooking and salad dressing instead of olive oil and why you should use other oils from time to time for sustainability.
Olive trees are suffering from climate change
Olive trees actually tolerate the dry and warm Mediterranean climate well. However, extreme weather conditions in southern Europe are increasingly affecting them: heavy rains, heat waves, floods, forest fires and droughts are increasingly preventing olive trees from producing good enough fruit (or any fruit at all).
Rapeseed oil is a suitable regional alternative to olive oil.
A healthy alternative for cooking and baking: rapeseed oil
If you enjoy Mediterranean cuisine, you probably use olive oil a lot. Whether it’s an antipasti appetizer, spaghetti “alo e olio” or focaccia barese: the slightly bitter, fruity flavor of olive oil is an essential part of many recipes.
An alternative that doesn’t have the 1:1 flavor of olive oil but is just as versatile is cold-pressed rapeseed oil: this nutty-flavored oil is relatively heat-resistant, so it can be used for baking, boiling, steaming, and as a seasoning. It can also be used for frying, but in this case, watch the temperature: the smoke point is around 140 degrees Celsius, so heat it to a maximum of 130-140 degrees Celsius. If you want to fry or roast something at higher temperatures, you should use refined rapeseed oil.
In terms of health benefits, rapeseed oil is as healthy as olive oil. TheCanadian Nutrition Society considers rapeseed oil even healthier than olive oil: rapeseed oil has a particularly high content of omega-3 fatty acids.
