One of them is called “ One-Click-Down ”. This means that even a small adjustment of the washing machine is enough to save almost 50 percent of your energy.

How the “One Click” trick works

Even if the temperature is just one notch below the labeled temperature, you can save a lot of energy.

The temperature information on textile labels indicates the maximum temperature at which the item should be washed. However, many types of laundry can be washed at a lower temperature if they are lightly soiled. Modern washing machines and detergents are efficient enough to wash hygienically even at lower temperatures.

To save energy, many rely on the “one-click” principle: simply set the temperature during the wash cycle one level lower than the label says. According to the Consumer Advocacy Center, this can save up to half the energy used, depending on the age of the washing machine.

Energy savings from lower temperatures

For hygiene reasons, you should occasionally wash at 60 degrees.

If you wash laundry dried at 40 degrees at 30 degrees, you can save up to 40 percent of energy. According to the Consumer Advice Center, washing at 60-40 degrees Celsius saves up to 45 percent of energy. However, washing should be done at 60 degrees several times a year to prevent bacterial biofilms from forming.

However, for certain types of laundry, such as underwear, towels or bedding, 60 degrees is recommended. Higher temperatures are also appropriate in cases of allergies and some illnesses to neutralize microorganisms. Today, however, a temperature of 90 degrees is no longer as necessary.
